Bird Houses

Our backyard is a sanctuary. For us and for our feathered friends. We love to watch the birds eat, bathe and play as well as listen to them sing.
Providing the birds with a place to nest or rest is one way to help bring the birds to your backyard. You can make it fun for your family by choosing bird houses that go with your decor.

Garden of Eden

While reflecting in our little "Garden of Eden" I see a Noah's Ark Birdhouse and think about the days of long ago. The supposed simplier life. We often think how difficult it must have been....having to gather seeds, berries and nuts. You couldn't just walk into a store a buy what you wanted. How simple is that?
Yet the little birds that visit us do have such a life. They have come to expect that we will take care of them by providing shelter, a bite to eat and a place to rest.

Loving Squirrels

Do you love having those squirrels in your backyard cleaning out your birdfeeders daily (hourly)? If you are prepared to go to war I can give you several ideas on how to keep the seed in your feeders.

You might try one thing and it will work for awhile and then you will have to change your strategy and try something else.Lets start with squirrels are lazy and if you give them what they desire where they can get to it easily, they will leave your feeders alone (for a while). Try putting some of there favorite foods on the ground away from the bird feeder, They like peanuts, sunflower seeds and corn.

When this approach quits working we will try another.

Stay tuned

Unlike most pet retailers, BackyardDecorativeBirdhouses.com serves a specific purpose: to help people spice up their backyards and gardens by bringing in beautiful birds. The year-and-a-half old site has a unique selection, as well as a brand new blog.

Hebron, OH (PRWEB) November 27, 2008 -- When Donald and Laura Slater started with a simple goal on improving his farm, who knew it would lead to the driving force for developing his own businesses?

"We've always been interested in making our yard look better," began Donald Slater. "We live on an 80-acre farm and I feel like we have our own paradise."

We live on an 80-acre farm and I feel like we have our own paradise.

In 2007, the Slaters started up their own company and one of the focuses they have are birdhouses. Having launched in May 2007, www.BackyardDecorativeBirdhouses.com features a host of beautifully crafted birdhouses and birdfeeders, which can be a crucial piece for anyone with a backyard - big or small.

Offering competitive pricing and having a unique catalog, BackyardDecorativeBirdhouses.com is miles ahead of their competition in big box retailers. The site offers a brand of eco-friendly birdhouses.

"One of the brands we carry, Barnwood, makes their birdhouses from recycled barn wood," explained Slater. "It's a very neat and environmentally sound concept."

Slater enjoys Barnwood enough to have a few specials available with the purchase of them.

Alongside his unique products, Slater has recently launched a new blog, www.IdeasForYourBackyard.com. "It will have some very broad information about birds, such as how to care for a bird, how to start bird watching and how to care for your birdhouses and birdfeeders," he said.

As the site continues to grow and evolve, Slater intends to add more birdhouses and feeders to his catalog: "We're always looking for new suppliers." And though styles may change, one thing that will never stop being chic is the care of a beautiful backyard. This is a fact that Donald Slater is attuned to, after all, it's part of his upbringing.

"My father was a botanist," Slater said. "He was always bird watching and he always had birdhouses. It's the reason why we got into this type of business."

On a cold winter night in 2008,

On a cold winter night in 2008,
the backyard was quiet, and that‘s great.
The bird houses were hung in the trees with great care,
in hopes that our friends would stay warm again this year.
The birds were nestled all snug in their huts,
with visions of full feeders, even cracked nuts.
Mama in her nightgown, and I in my shorts,
had just settled our down to watch a show of some sort.
When out in the backyard, we heard the birds singing,
I jumped from the couch to see what was happening.
Away to the doorway I tripped and I stumbled,
threw open the door, and just started to mumble.
The moon on the KOI pond showed the new-fallen snow,
so bright was the lighted pathway, showing stepping stones aglow.
My eyes went to a statue, standing tall and so proud,
when, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
but a chimenea with a warm fires glow.
On the limb of the hawthorn, a chickadee appeared,
He was on a mission, there was no doubt.
He whistled and screeched, then flew all about.
"Now Cardinal! Now Swallow!
Now, Finch and Barn Owl!
Come Woodpecker! Come, Martin!
Come Blue Birds, come all!
To the feeders on the table!
To the feeders on the lawn!
There are even sunflower seeds all over the ground!”
The birds were all singing and eating some thistle,
While others at the pond were wetting their whistle,
When all the seed was gone they flew to their houses,
Staying warm through the night they like their birdhouses.
Tomorrow I will feed them again, and all through the winter!
Our birds are like family, we love them around.
Singing and whistling their own unique sounds.
Keep your friends feed, and treat them like family,
Next year they’ll be back and you’ll be there envy!
"Warm Winter to all, and to all a good night!"

Green Birdhouses from recycled wood

When looking on a web search for green birdhouses all I could find were paper houses. I like the birdhouses made out of recycled barn wood for several reasons.
There are so many birds today looking for a nesting place, so along the creek line I like to put up several bird houses a year and it is a very overgrown area. To be able to get back and clean these often is very time consuming. What would happen if I never got back to these houses?
Placing birdhouses made of recycled wood along the creek, they will last because of the weathered wood and also over an extended period of time they will deterioate back into the ground to help the soil unlike many metal or modern houses with a varnish or stain.

Hammock, What a way to relax!

I know this is a birdhouse blog and this article is about hammocks, but that's why there is a plus in the name. I just could'nt resist putting one of my favorite items on this blog. Enjoy!!

Hammocks have been around for years and there is no better way to relax in your own backyard, then to be in a hammock on a warm afternoon or evening.
Can you picture yourself in your hammock (with your partner) on a warm romantic evening, and enjoying the cool breeze and the peacefulness of the surroundings of your own backyard island paradise.

Birding for the Christmas and Winter Season

If you are a birding anthuist, as I am you will want to decorate your home with many different seasonal items. I like to use several different decorative birdhouses and birdfeeders with Christmas or winter themes.
These unique Christmas bird houses and seasonal bird feeders can also be used around the outside of your home and then either packed away to save for next year or left out for the remainder of the winter season.

Barn Wood Birdhouses

On a picture perfect rustic gray morning, late in 2002, Jerem, took a stroll in a nearby farmer's field to clear his head. As he carefully maneuvered around the dried cow pies and huge holes in the ground--features of the western landscape--he pondered deeply about the meaning of life and how he could make a difference--how he could make the world a better place. He paused briefly to lean on an old, dilapidated barn--a decaying but majestically framed feature of the rustic landscape--to view the rising sun and reflect on how lucky he was to live where he did: where open spaces and livestock were not rare and where he could breathe in the fresh air and enjoy the sun peeking over the Rocky Mountains.

He also thought about how it must be like to live in the city--where a decaying rustic barn was something you only saw framed in pictures and photos. Then, just as the sun reached over the mountains, the old weathered barn which he leaned against started to creak and groan and crumbled to the ground--covering poor Jerem in a heap of old broken wood and rusty nails.
Later he nursed his wounds and carefully removed splinters from his skin, Jerem thought of an idea that would be of benefit to the farmer as well as the city folk dreaming of wide-open rural spaces: he would take down the barns that were no longer useful agriculturally and provide the wood and products made out of the wood to those who needed this bit of the country in their home to keep their sanity. Thus All Barnwood was born. . . 3 of the recycled birdhouses are pictured above.

New Barn Wood Birdhouses

Hello again friends; I received a msg from a person in Az. and he wanted to know if I would be interested in his barn wood birdhouses. If you would let me know if any of these birdhouses would interest you. We are trying to decide if we should purchase any.

Hope everyone has a fantastic Labor Day Weekend and remember fall is coming and it is time to start updating your birdfeeders for the winter.

p.s. I think we will call these birdhouses: 1. The Saw
2. High Rise
3. a little of everything
4. natures way
5. neighbors with vines

More Pictures

Well, I finally broke down and bought a new weed eater. It is a 4 cycle and all I have to do is put gas in it (no more mixing gas & oil). We have a lot of trimming to do in the back yard and other parts of the farm and a good weed eater is essential.

I had to leave yesterday so I did'nt get to add all the pictures of the KOI Pond so here are some more. I have to finish the turtle pen as the turtles are out of hibernation and need to be moved out side into their habitat soon.

Monday, May 12, 2008

Hello Chris (Seattle) Here are 2 pictures of the KOI Pond now, it is under construction this year as I put in a new liner and am building a pen for the turtles. I will add more.

May Day is here

Well look, its May 1st already and my backyard really needs alot of attention. The KOI Pond is still not finished yet but the KOI and gold fish are happy and the plants are starting to grow! I need to clean out several birdhouses and bird feeders and put up new ones. I have even though about putting a water fountain in the pond but not sure yet.
