Purple Martin Birdhouse

One of the favorite birds of people who are not necessarily serious students of other types of bird is the Purple Martin.  This friendly fellow returns the affection by preferring to live around humans. The Purple Martin or Progne subis has been lovingly housed by many for nostalgic reasons — their grandparents and parents had martin houses.  And this bird, for whom everyone watches eagerly in the spring, comes back to his established home year after year.

Woodland Squirrel Birdfeeder

Fall is difinetly here. The temperatures are finally cooler. The grass is dry and the leaves are beginning to change colors. The geese are flying south! It reminds me to make sure the birdfeeders are in good repair and to keep them full. The birds that have been feeding all summer will know that there has always been a fresh source of food. And other birds traveling south may stop in for a visit and rest awhile.

Hanging Bird Feeders

With the onset of cooler temperatures, we have been cleaning up our yard and flower beds. One of the things we do when pulling out our sunflowers is to snip the dried flower and put them in our hanging bird feeders. When we have the giant sunflowers we will leave the head on something high, like the picnic table or swing frame. The birds will have fun cleaning out the seeds.

Hummingbirds

We've had an unusally warm spring. Beautiful as a matter of fact! That being said the last few days have been cooler and rainy. We need the rain so I'm not complaining. This morning while I was sitting on the porch looking out over the farm and watching the birds. I was surprised by a tiny little visitor. We have our first hummingbird of the year. This was one of the ruby throated. I can't say that we've ever seen a ruby here until now. They are absolutely exquiste.

Decorative Birdhouses

It turned a little cool today and there is talk about another snow. Do you know the old saying about there will be three snows after the forsythia blooms? Well we have only had two snows, so if the saying is true we're in for another snow. Then we'll have warmer temperatures that will stick around through spring, summer and fall. But until them the little birds that come our way will have a place to stay. They will be out of the weather in a dry home of their own. They won't be bothered by the wind, rain, or snow. Do you have birdhouses for you feathered friends?

Bird Cafe Birdhouse

I have surely missed hearing the birds sing. At last the last few days with the warmer temperatures the birds are coming back! I sit on the porch and listen to them call and sing to each other as they flit about looking for materials to build their nests. I love the decorative birdhouses and have several. Are you a fan of backyard birding?

Decorative Birdfeeders

Now that the holidays are over, it is a good time to start focusing on Spring. You can make your selections for some new birdhouses or birdfeeders for your yard. The retailers will be adding new products to their inventories and you can get a jump start on your plans to decorate your yard or garden. Another added bonus to this, is that if your birdhouses and birdfeeders are in place the early birds will settle in sooner.
